Artificial intelligence is not the "future of dating." I can prove it.

Welcome to Cheaper Than Therapy, a newsletter by Shani Silver.

Every flower currently in my back yard. None of them were planted intentionally. New Orleans just sort of grows.

Leave it to humans to break what doesn’t need fixing. We used to meet, connect, and fall in love without technological assistance of any kind. Someone thought that dating and organic relationships took too much time and effort during our “busy lives.” So the dating industry was born, and it made everything faster and easier, right…? What’s that you say? It made dating harder, more time consuming, and fruitless? Weird.

The dating industry is so good at ruining things, they’re about to do it again. The founder of Bumble, who met her husband on a ski trip, thinks the future of dating is AI.

You can read more about how the insatiable tech executives are going to profit off human loneliness next in this article, if you want. Or you can keep reading me, someone who’s been calling out the dating industry for exploiting single people since 2018, and who can foresee the havoc that AI and avatar-based dating will cause before they happen. Yes I said avatar-based dating, as in non-humans dating on behalf of humans, because that’s where this is going. We’ve been here before, on the precipice of human connection changing forever, only this time we already know that dating apps destroyed dating for profit. Are we still gullible enough to believe that AI dating is going to make things better? Are we going to fall for this again?
