Welcome to Cheaper Than Therapy, a newsletter by Shani Silver.

A few days ago I sent an apartment listing to a friend, telling her I’d love to live in it, if I was 23. The space was beautiful and in my price range, it had abundant windows, a cute kitchen, the location was ideal. It was also 450 square feet. A great place to live if you don’t own any furniture, clothing, or memories.

For almost a year, I’ve been trying to move to a more affordable home. Something about the rise of fascism has resulted in both an increase in the cost of everything, which you’re familiar with, and a decrease in my income. I know I’m not the only one going through this, especially not in the single community. So I’ve been searching for a new place to live that will meet my economic needs while preserving my dignity and quality of life. I think I’m slowly being priced out of dignity and quality of life. Every home I’d actually consider living in is sized for singles but priced for couples, and everything I can afford looks like a place they’d keep hostages.
